Adoption of resolution 70/46 on countering the threat posed by improvised explosive devices (7 December 2015) [fr]
During the seminars of the 8th and 9th of June 2015 on IED, organised by France and Switzerland in Divonne-Les-Bains, Afghanistan announced its itnention to table a draft resolution on IED during the 70th session of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (October 2015).
The text of the resolution covers every aspect of the threat posed by IED and lists the different fora fighting this phenomenon. It also points out the risk associated to the default of cotnrolling potential precursors. The operative clauses identify the different lines of action to fight against and the IED, and invite States to committ to that.
The penultimate clause of the resolution invites the Secretary General to produce a "report on IED" that would take into account the effort already undertaken and would look for the views of the member-States in order to issue recommendations that member-States will be invited to examine during the 71th session (October 2016). The writing of this report has been given to the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA).
Sponsored by France and Australia, the resolution has been adopted by consensus.
