Third dession of the meeting of Governmental Experts to the FMCT (from the 12th to the 23rd of January, 2015) [fr]
The third session of the Group of government experts to the FMCT is gathering in Geneva from the 12th to the 23rd of January. France is represented within the groupby the Ambassador Jean-Hugues Simon-Michel, Permanent representative of France to the Conference on Disarmament.
Francce is strongly attached to start the negotiations of a fissile material cut off treaty, that being the next logical step regarding nuclear disarmament, that is in line with the framework of the action 15 of the NPT action plan of 2010. The comprehensive test ban treaty enabled to stop the qualitative improvement of weapons. The FMCT will enable to act on the quantity, by prohibiting the production of fissile material, being the raw material of weapons. This treaty will also include benefits regarding the fight against proliferation.
The establishment of a group of government experts is the result of the adoption by the General Assembly, during its 67th session (2012) of the resolution A/RES/67/53 titled "fissil material cut off treaty".
The resolution was adopted with the support of 166 States, showing then the strong committment of the international community for this initiative.
France hopes that the works of the group of governmental experts will contribute to move forward on this important matter.
